Accessibility Advisory Group
The Accessibility Advisory Group (formerly the Kāpiti Disability Resource Group) was established in 2001 and helps link the Kāpiti Coast District Council (KCDC) with disability networks on the Kāpiti Coast. It is currently chaired by Sue Emirali and has members who represent a wide range of disabilities.
The AAG provides advice to the Council on planning, funding, managing and delivering services for people with disabilities – with a particular focus on issues of access, equity and inclusion.
The AAG meets six times a year. Meetings are attended by a liaison officer from the Council and a representative from Well-Able, which is the umbrella organisation for the group.
Recent projects and activities undertaken by the group include the provision of advice on:
- the design of town centre refurbishments
- the provision of mobility car parks
- footpath treatment to assist visually impaired citizens
- the location of accessible bus stops
The AAG is represented on the Council’s road safety group and the walkways, bridle paths and cycleways advisory group.
New Reference Resource
The AAG have been working with the support of the Kāpiti Coast District Council's Community Grants Scheme to produce a Help Compendium that offers useful advice, contacts and references relating to disability, funding and services, daily living aids & equipment, support groups and the Total Mobility Scheme.
It is a well written and researched document making it an excellent community resource.
